Miniatures from Tasmanian Huon Pine

My Story

Timber and Wood Working has been with me almost all my life.
It all began as a child. At first I whittled away every piece of timber I could find and then before I knew it, my parents had me doing an apprenticeship in Cabinet making. After  I successfully  completed this, I worked for a further two years in that trade before migrating from my native Germany to Australia

On arrival in this country I found that the qualifications that allowed me to come  to Australia were not recognized. Consequently I left my trade and worked for a number of years in the retail world.

My love for timber did not leave me and I returned to the world of wood working in 1987, settling in Tasmania because of  its natural beauty and the abundance of fine craft and furniture timbers.

Cultural influences and life's experiences are reflected in much of my work. In my quest to  create unique and exclusive miniatures I have received awards both here and interstate. My craft can be found in many parts of the world, some easily qualifying as heirlooms of the future.

The Product

In these days of machined, mass produced wares I prefer to utilize hand tools cherishing the feel and warmth of the wood, treating each piece with the respect it deserves. I allow the natural shapes, grain and colors of the timber to guide and inspire me to create each particular piece, but each part of the entirety is carefully chosen to add to the overall artistic value of the. final product.

My work is three dimensional, but there is also a fourth dimension which presents an animated message or underlying theme - satire - humor - past experience - human desire.
